Globalization: Examples in Engineering

Civil Engineering

Civil engineers are currently working on building completely self-contained communities. In Tokyo bay (below) the Shimizu Pyramid will house 750,000 people (Wikipedia, 2008).

In Dubai the Ziggurat (left) is expected to house 1 million people (Curwin, 2011). In each case the pyramid will include full services from medical to commercial to schools housed in a single structure. To build the futuristic structure super strong, lightweight materials from suppliers around the world, based on nanotubes will be required to support the structure and live loads. The Ziggurat will be carbon neutral and host vertical and horizontal transportation systems. The Ziggurat would only use 10% of land space that a million people would normally need.
