Resolution of Team Divergence: Conflict Resolution Strategies

Competing

A strong win/lose perspective is reflected with a competing strategy. It views conflict as a natural part of life and the conflict arising from competition should not be feared or avoided but embraced. It views competition as a way to achieve a stronger product and more successful interactions.

Two examples would be Greeks who love to argue and debate. Conflict and the challenge to win the debate is a part of life. The other example would be Israeli market vendors and buyers who love to haggle over the posted price to get the best deal. The down side to competing is that cooperation and sharing needed on a team may be sacrificed in order for one team member to win over another.

On a GV team, if two viable options are developed to a solution, the team may be divided in to subgroups to determine which alternative is best. A GV team leader may offer incentives for team members to achieve goals on or ahead of time. The leader may also provide incentive for team members who were most helpful, creative or collaborative as nominated by other team members.
