Lesson 9: Virtual Communication

Reflection/Assignment

Take a moment and see if you can remember using any of the following technologies that were once state of the art but are now obsolete. Make a note of all the technologies you can remember using.

  • Beta or VHS videos
  • A radio with only an AM dial
  • Vinyl Albums
  • Cassette recorders
  • 8-Track tape players
  • Typewriters (electric or manual)
  • Telephones with a turn dial
  • 5-inch floppy computer discs
  • A 13-channel dial TV
  • A walkman
  • A TV with only a Black and white picture
  • An analog TV with Rabbit-ear antennas

  • How many do you remember using or even having knowledge of? Each of the items listed above have one thing in common. Each was, at one time, the state of the art in technology. How many of these technologies allowed for back and forth interaction between two people (either one-way or two-way communication)? How quickly did this communication happen?
